Sweet Joe-Pye Weed may be
easily confused with:
- Hollow Joe-Pye Weed
Stem of hollow Joe-Pye weed is tinged with purple, while that is sweet is green with black or purple at the joints, with a white bloom. Hollow JPW has leaves usually in whorls of 6, with sweet JPW usually has whorls of 3 or 4.
- Spotted Joe-Pye Weed
Stems of sweet Joe-Pye weed are green with purple or black at the joints; stems of spotted Joe-Pye weed are spotted throughout with purple, or are completely purple.
- Upland Boneset
Upland boneset has leaves in pairs, while joe-pye weeds have whorls of four or more.
- White-Bracted Thoroughwort
Joe-Pye weed is normally pink, though rarely white. Thoroughword flowers grow in a flat cluster, while Joe-Pye weed had a large, domed cluster of flowers.
