Notes:
May have 5-8 rays. Leavey only shallowly toothed.

easily confused with:
- Pale-Leaved Sunflower
Small wood sunflower has smaller blooms.
- Sneezeweed
Sneezeweed has a relatively unusually shaped petal, roughly triangular with a scalloped outer edge. Leaves of small wood sunflower grow in pairs; sneezeweed leaves are single.
- Thin-Leaved Sunflower
Blossom of the small wood sunflower is smaller, and the leaves are narrower than those of thin-leaved sunflower. Leaves of thin-leaved snflower are stemless.
- Woodland Sunflower
Small wood sunflower has a smaller blossom.
